From the desk
of District
Superintendent
Kevin V.Cox

Our economic structure of capitalism is based on competition.  Accordingly, we have been taught that competition is a good thing. Yet, when this attitude creeps into the church, we begin to contradict what Jesus taught. Jesus never wanted us to adopt the "I" attitude.

Consider that Philip left a mighty revival in Acts 8, just to minister to one Ethiopian man riding in a chariot in the desert. Would we do that? Who wants to herald only one had been baptized in a revival, versus reporting many miracles and a whole community being converted?

Obviously, Philip was not involved in competition. In fact, Philip further exemplifies his humble attitude by asking for Peter and John to come and help those people receive the Holy Ghost. I am glad that Philip wasn't interested in who received the credit. He just wanted to spread the gospel! He didn't possess an "I" attitude. Philip reflected the words of Jesus, "He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."

We do want larger crowds in our buildings. We do need more manifestations of miracles in our churches. We do desire more people being baptized in Jesus' name and being filled with the Holy Ghost.  But, we do not strive for these things just to prove we are better than our neighbor. We do not build new buildings just because the neighboring church built a new building. We do not build family life centers just because the other churches in town built one.

We must focus on what best benefits the Kingdom of God. We must spotlight Him! We must determine how we can best serve Jesus Christ!
